“Realness” is one of the competition categories at the ball. The contestants have to pass as the characters they embody. But this realness sits on the limit between being real beyond any doubt in your category and at the same time having that artificial quality in your character representation. Moreover, “realness” is training to survive as a queer or trans person, to pass as “regular”, in everyday life outside the ballroom.
But is the category still relevant today?
