The first thing you should know is: jungle is massive. It is defined by fast cuts, carefully arranged breaks, sharp percussion, and occasional piercing vocals. These blend perfectly with the genre’s deep yet soulful basslines and emotional harmonies, creating a unique mix of sounds, influences, and cultures. Thus, it is no surprise that this movement has given birth to some of underground music’s most listened to and appreciated genres while humbly staying in the shadows.

After a while of silence regarding sound system culture events and parties, Romania steps out with a festival dedicated to this music - DubCamp festival 24-26 of June. We had our moments. The sound system on the streets of Bucharest during Street Delivery at the beginning of 2010, One Love Festival, Subsonic Festival, Reggae Pon di Hills, and some other small gatherings pinpointed the first local steps in the sound system culture.

On the 6th of May, with the occasion of the final instalment of Bandcamp Friday, leading contemporary jungle label Future Retro London put out a triple release – two 12’’ records and one 10’’ vinyl, all in limited edition and accompanied by their respective digital versions.

Adrian Sherwood called Mark Stewart, his frequent collaborator, intimidating, but now, two years after we connected, I have a special relationship with the artist/ philosopher and poet.

Steve Barker is a DJ with the BBC and has been playing underground music and sound since 1977 and took interviews with Adrian Sherwood, Lee Scratch Perry, Bono, and Morrissey, in Lancashire. Barker, who turns 72 this year, is the host of On the Wire. The show has been on air for 37 years now and has reached more than 1,800 episodes.

Warren Walker holds the torch high when it comes to innovation in jazz. His first electronic jazz LP, (N)Traverse, has a very intimate process behind it. Each song is a collab with one of his jazz and fusion artist friends during the 2020 pandemic. Having met on the jazz stages of the world, they now approached working within the realm of sound collage and sound synthesis, from home, safely and unrushed.

Mark Stewart is an artist, vocalist, producer, and songwriter from Bristol. As a founding member of The Pop Group, Mark Stewart & The Maffia, and as a soloist, Stewart has remained an anarchic and pioneering figure since the punk era, a constant source of discordance amongst the frontiers of post-punk, dub, industrial, and electronic music.

Cali P's family musical background has transformed him into a fearless deejay and rapper with a strong, enthusiastic vocal delivery. Starting 2005, he released five albums and 24 vinyl singles and EP's on labels such as Nation Music, Hemp Higher Productions, One Love Records, and others. TEKA is a lover of analog vibes. You sense that in his productions, riddims, and collaborations. What kicked off his collab with Cali P was a Migos Remix.

Romanian jazz, mythology, spirituality, and science fiction have had a strong relationship since the seventies. And so you can find a thin red dotted line between Electrecord LP’s like Marius Popp’s Nodul Gordian, Ramon Tavernier and Cătălin Târcolea’s Panpipe In Jazz, Zoltan Boroș’s Pași spre Infinit and Harry Tavitian and Corneliu Stroe’s Creation Suite and present days independent jazz artists like Adi Stoenescu and his group, plus his collaborations with Alexandru Arcuș, Krisper band, and Iordache.

Tim Whelan is a composer, producer, and multi-instrumentist in the notorious collective Transglobal Underground. The group shines with a fusion of western, Asian, and African music styles.

Prince Fatty is famous for his work engineering, recording, mixing, and mastering Jamaican sounds, ever since 1996. With his famous alternative versions, Prince Fatty has always created bridges to connect reggae, dub, ska, rock, disco, electronic, and hip-hop. The interview with Prince Fatty and Shniece followed topics such as recording, mixing in Thailand, touring Brazil, friendships, and studio time.

Released on the 10th of September on EXPEDITion100, local producer Nerub releases Human Nature. Put on vinyl, Nerub draws a picture of the dichotomy between the nature of man and nature in and of itself with all facets of the existence of man and nature.

JAM CIRCLE is a series of live concerts meant to document the contemporary jazz scene from Romania, in order to support musicians in releasing their fresh works, bringing their performances into your home and heart. The project brings a new spark to the Romanian cultural landscape.

After ten years of making eclectic music, the dub ghost musician from Romania has tuned-in to another frequency creating Lil Obeah from Transylvania. When it comes to his sound, he defines it as duppy dub from a parallel universe - The Shape of Dub to Come dimension.

This weekend we celebrate with the family. Close friends, collaborators, and radio broadcasters Ana Cazacu, Antonio Nartea, and Tudor Gheorghe are opening a new spot in Bucharest, Platforma Wolff - The Dj Bar.

The interview follows the past and present of traditional radio in the context of the much younger and enthusiastic online radio.

We begin the series of ” A look inside the online radio stations” with Xanthe Fuller - Creator Marketing & Partnerships Director at Mixcloud, and broadcaster at Soho Radio. The notorious global fusion electronica anarchy London-based collective, Transglobal Underground, have teamed up with Transylvania’s Lil Obeah of the Sound of Art to Come label. Sometimes written as Trans-Global Underground or simply as TGU, the music collective is specialized in a fusion of western, Asian and African music styles.

After his debut single on the CXC release series in 2019, Romania-based DJ/Producer Brusten returns to Counterpoint Recordings, now with a 4-track EP for the main label. He invites fellow countryman Freqax and Mighty Boogie for 2 stunning collabs, and German MC Resc returns to drop his powerful vocals on ‘Res0nate’.

A day before its official release, Black Rhino Music is happy to be hosting an exclusive stream for Stefan Bachvarov’s return to Bulgarian label Amek Collective as Cyberian. His new full-length “Dark Orphism” releases tomorrow on vinyl limited to 222 copies and digital.
